Orthokeratology
What
is Ortho-K?
Orthokeratology
is the use of Contact Lenses to change the shape of the Cornea to reduce or
correct Myopic (short-sighted) and Astigmatic (irregular surface) errors of
the eye. In some ways this is similar to the use of dental braces by an Orthodontist
to straighten crooked teeth. The main difference is that if a tooth position
is corrected for some months it will stay in the new position.
The Cornea
is highly elastic, however, and always returns to its original shape. For
this reason the Contact Lenses are worn nightly, alternate nights or two to
three hours each day after the ideal Corneal shape has been achieved.
Why
have Ortho-K done?
The main
purpose of Ortho-K is to be free of both Contact Lenses and Spectacles for
the majority of, or possibly all, waking hours. The freedom from any artificial
aid appeals to Myopic Spectacle and Contact Lens wearers and is ideal for
sportsmen, swimmers, those who work in dusty or dirty environments or VDU
users (dry atmospheres).
This technique
is also good for people who have to attain visual standards without spectacles
for certain occupations, e.g. Policemen, Firemen and Pilots.
Possibly
the ideal situation for using Ortho-K is for the teenager just becoming short-sighted.
Not only does it have all the advantages already given above, but the procedure
appears to stabilise the progression of the Myopia.
