Helping patients with DRY-EYE symptoms

One of the most common complaints that we as Optometrists come across in the consulting room is that of ‘Dry-Eye’. Many patients complain of:

• A burning sensation in one or both eyes, worst on waking
  
• A scratchy, sandy feeling, especially under the upper lid
  
• Light sensitivity
• Inability to produce tears
  
• Inconsistent excessive tearing
  
• Blurry vision on reading after a short time as the eye becomes watery.
  

All of these signs could indicate a problem of lack of good quality tears. This leads to increased evaporation of the tears that are made and a ‘dry-eye’ develops. This can be helped with the use of ‘artificial tears’ but the frequency with which these need to be inserted can be a problem.

These are inserted into the drainage punctum in the eyelids and so increase the volume of tears by stopping their natural drainage.
